Madagascar has become the third African country to test Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity technology following a successful demonstration carried out by Airtel Madagascar in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Development, Posts and Telecommunications (MNDPT).
The trial, which took place in Sadabe on July 11, was attended by Minister Mahefa Andriamampiadana, representatives of the Communications Regulatory Authority (ARTEC), the National Disaster Risk Management Office (BNGRC), and other stakeholders.
The development represents a major milestone in Madagascar’s digital transformation journey, placing the country alongside Kenya and Uganda as the only African nations to have tested the emerging technology.
Direct-to-Cell technology enables standard 4G smartphones to connect directly to satellites when users are outside the coverage range of terrestrial mobile networks. During the demonstration, participants successfully completed Madagascar’s first WhatsApp video call using the technology. The trial also showcased satellite-powered messaging services, voice and video calls, as well as access to digital platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.
According to the ministry, the technology could significantly improve connectivity in remote and underserved communities where conventional telecommunications infrastructure is either limited or unavailable. It could also prove invaluable during emergencies and natural disasters by maintaining communication links when terrestrial networks are disrupted.
The government reiterated its commitment to promoting technologies that advance digital inclusion while ensuring adherence to legal requirements, digital sovereignty, and security standards. Expanding access to digital services remains a key priority as Madagascar continues to pursue its broader digital transformation agenda.
The ministry further noted that the successful trial highlights the country’s progress in the telecommunications sector and reflects the commitment of both the government and its partners to ensuring that advanced digital technologies become accessible to citizens across Madagascar, irrespective of their location.
