Nigeria Develops Indigenous Drone Technology to Tackle Insurgents

Nigeria is increasing the deployment of locally developed drone technology as part of efforts to enhance its domestic defense capabilities and intensify operations against insurgent groups.

Local technology firm UNICCON is currently developing a range of drones for surveillance, reconnaissance and combat missions, including loitering munitions specifically designed to suit Nigeria’s operating environment and terrain.

According to the military, drones have become a key component of operations against insurgents across the country. Engineers are also working on systems capable of detecting and neutralising hostile drones.

The initiative underscores Nigeria’s drive to reduce reliance on foreign technology while aligning with a broader global trend toward indigenous military innovation and the increasing role of drone warfare in modern security operations.
