Five Nigerian Robotics Startups Driving the Future of Autonomous Technology

The robotics landscape in Nigeria is gradually evolving. What was once largely associated with university laboratories, technology competitions and students developing small machines for exhibitions is now giving way to a growing wave of companies transforming robotics and artificial intelligence into practical solutions for education, security, agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing and other sectors.

From developing intelligent machines and locally produced autonomous drones to establishing robotics laboratories where engineers can acquire practical skills, Nigeria’s robotics ecosystem is moving beyond experimentation and towards commercial applications.

Although several startups are contributing to this development, companies such as Terra Industries, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (R.A.I.N.), Arone Technologies, Sentient Robotics and Gugu Robotics are emerging as notable players. Their work is helping to shape what could become Nigeria’s next frontier in advanced technology.

Meet the Startups

1. Terra Industries

Terra Industries, formerly known as Terrahaptix, is an Abuja-based robotics and manufacturing startup developing autonomous security systems powered by drones and artificial intelligence. Its technologies are designed to detect threats and support the protection of critical industries, including energy, mining, telecommunications and agriculture.

The company was founded in 2024 by Maxwell Maduka and Nathan Nwachuku.

Terra’s portfolio includes unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles and autonomous surveillance systems, all supported by its proprietary operating system, ArtemisOS.

ArtemisOS is designed to support autonomous mission planning, real-time threat detection, obstacle avoidance, target tracking and the coordination of multiple unmanned systems. According to the company, the platform can also transform data collected from drones and other sensors into geospatial intelligence.

Terra has attracted significant international attention after raising $52 million in seed funding, a figure that would make it one of the largest funding rounds recorded by an African startup. The funding is expected to support the company’s expansion, including increased manufacturing capacity and international operations.

In February 2026, the startup reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) for a joint venture focused on local production, assembly, research and development, and training in high-technology systems, including drones, robotics, cybersecurity and related hardware and software.

Earlier, in February 2025, Terra launched what it described as the largest drone factory in Africa. The facility covers 15,000 square feet (1,394 square metres) on the outskirts of Abuja.

Although the factory was not yet operating at full production capacity, the company reported that it could build up to 30,000 drones annually. These include long-range drones for surveillance missions, quadcopters for first response and data collection, as well as small self-driving vehicles for ground surveillance.

These developments highlight Terra’s ambition to help move Nigeria beyond being primarily a consumer and importer of sophisticated technology towards becoming a designer, manufacturer and exporter of autonomous systems.

2. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (R.A.I.N.)

While Terra Industries is pushing the capabilities of autonomous machines, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (R.A.I.N.), founded by Dr Olusola Ayoola, is focused on developing both the technology and the human capacity required to build and maintain such systems.

Based in Ibadan, R.A.I.N. operates as a technology hub and research centre focused on robotics, artificial intelligence, automation and product development.

Its facility features a robotics laboratory and equipment for areas such as 3D printing, CNC machining and embedded systems. The organisation’s Robot Development and Automation programme covers technologies and areas including Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ROS, SLAM, computer vision, IoT, C++, Python, robot-arm kinematics, drone development and autonomous vehicles.

The programme places strong emphasis on product development. Rather than focusing solely on theory, trainees are expected to build physical systems as part of their learning.

Projects undertaken through its programmes include robots, drones, computer vision systems and automated technologies. Its broader objectives also include supporting academic research and developing embedded, automated, IoT and robot-based systems for commercial applications.

Beyond developing machines, R.A.I.N. is contributing to the development of the skilled workforce needed by robotics companies and startups to expand the sector.

3. Arone Technologies

The emerging startups in Nigeria’s robotics ecosystem are approaching the industry from different angles. Arone Technologies, an Enugu-based technology company, is developing drones, artificial intelligence systems and renewable-energy hardware.

The company operates a facility in Nsukka where engineers assemble drone airframes, test control systems and work on battery modules. This positions Arone around local manufacturing and hard-tech development.

Arone Technologies and the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, reportedly announced a N12.95 billion manufacturing partnership covering aerospace, robotics, artificial intelligence and renewable energy.

The company’s platform currently lists plans involving 20,000 Aurora M3 drones, 120,000 LUMINAR units and 200 QView AI servers.

Arone represents another important aspect of Nigeria’s growing robotics ecosystem: the development of local physical manufacturing capacity needed to scale technologies developed within the country.

4. Sentient Robotics

Sentient Robotics is taking a broader approach to autonomous systems, developing technologies designed for use across air, land, water and subsea environments.

Its work covers unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles, unmanned surface vessels and subsea systems. These technologies have potential applications in surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics, mapping, maritime patrol and inspection.

The company’s approach demonstrates how robotics can extend beyond the familiar concept of flying drones to become interconnected technology platforms capable of operating across different environments.

For Nigeria, which has a coastline, oil and gas infrastructure, a major agricultural sector and significant security challenges, these technologies could potentially support activities ranging from infrastructure inspection and environmental monitoring to logistics.

5. Gugu Robotics

Gugu Robotics is another Nigerian company operating at the intersection of robotics, artificial intelligence and drone technology.

Its work covers applications in areas such as agriculture, mining, healthcare and specialised industrial operations. This reflects the growing interest in using autonomous technologies to address challenges specific to African markets.

The importance of companies such as Gugu Robotics extends beyond defence and surveillance. Their work demonstrates the potential for robotics to support sectors that directly influence productivity and economic development.

The startup says it designs and implements advanced network systems that support interconnected robotic platforms, electric vehicle fleets and IoT devices. These network solutions are designed to facilitate communication, data exchange and remote monitoring across distributed systems.

The Road Ahead for Nigeria’s Robotics Industry

The emergence of these startups shows that Nigeria’s robotics ecosystem is gradually moving from experimentation towards practical and commercial applications.

As companies work to transform the country’s growing interest in robotics into a sustainable industry capable of solving local problems and competing internationally, unlocking the sector’s full potential will require increased investment, stronger research infrastructure, greater local manufacturing capacity and a steady supply of skilled talent.

The progress of companies such as Terra Industries, R.A.I.N., Arone Technologies, Sentient Robotics and Gugu Robotics suggests that robotics and autonomous technology could play an increasingly important role in Nigeria’s technological and economic future.
