The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Customs administration of the Republic of Benin have reinforced their partnership on the deployment of geospatial technology aimed at enhancing economic security, strengthening border surveillance, and promoting legitimate trade along their shared border corridor.
The renewed collaboration was underscored during a meeting held at the ECOWAS Conference Hall at the Seme-Krake Joint Border Post.
Speaking during the meeting, the Customs Area Controller of the Seme Area Command, Comptroller Abdullahi Kaila, described the initiative as a major step forward in improving border management, increasing trade activities, and addressing security challenges along one of West Africa’s busiest trade routes.
He noted that the adoption of geospatial technology would equip Customs authorities with improved intelligence and operational capabilities to combat smuggling and other cross-border crimes more effectively.
Also addressing participants, the Head of Geospatial at the Nigeria Customs Service, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Labaran Ahmed, explained that the initiative is intended to pilot the Service’s border management application through the World Customs Organisation (WCO) satellite platform.
According to Ahmed, the new technology will enable Customs authorities to identify vulnerable points along the border and strategically deploy field officers to those areas, allowing for targeted operations and improved enforcement outcomes.
