startAD Introduces UAE’s First AI Adoption Barometer Focused on Healthcare and Social Impact

startAD Launches UAE’s First AI Adoption Barometer to Guide Healthcare and Social Impact Organizations

startAD, the Abu Dhabi-based startup accelerator powered by Tamkeen and anchored at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), has introduced the UAE’s first AI Adoption Barometer focused on the healthcare and social impact sectors. Developed through its AI for Good initiative with support from Google.org, the new benchmark provides practical insights into how organizations are adopting artificial intelligence and where they face the greatest implementation challenges.

Based on feedback from 52 organizations across the UAE, the AI Adoption Barometer offers a practitioner-led assessment of AI readiness, helping decision-makers understand current adoption trends while identifying the steps needed to move from experimentation to long-term implementation.

Turning AI Interest into Practical Adoption

Although enthusiasm for artificial intelligence continues to grow, many organizations are still looking for practical ways to integrate the technology into their operations. According to the findings, successful AI adoption requires more than identifying promising technologies. Organizations must also establish governance frameworks, allocate appropriate resources, implement responsible AI practices, and define measurable outcomes.

The report also emphasizes the importance of creating clear performance indicators and scaling successful pilot projects into organization-wide initiatives that deliver lasting value.

Healthcare Sector Shows Strong Momentum

The healthcare sector is leading AI adoption among surveyed organizations.

The study found that 81% of healthcare organizations have already identified AI use cases, while 58% are actively piloting or deploying AI solutions. However, financial preparedness remains a significant challenge, with 42% reporting that they do not have a dedicated AI budget despite ongoing implementation efforts.

This gap suggests that while many organizations recognize AI’s strategic importance, long-term investment planning has yet to fully align with adoption ambitions.

Social Impact Organizations Face Earlier-Stage Challenges

The social impact sector is progressing at a different pace.

Many organizations are still working to identify suitable AI applications while developing the internal capabilities, governance structures, and technical expertise required for responsible implementation.

The findings indicate that capacity building and strategic planning remain critical priorities before AI can be deployed at scale across the sector.

New Playbooks to Support AI Implementation

Alongside the AI Adoption Barometer, startAD has launched two practical implementation guides designed to help organizations navigate their AI journey.

The AI Use Case Discovery Playbook helps organizations identify and validate AI opportunities without requiring technical expertise, making it easier for teams to translate business challenges into practical AI projects.

The Evaluate and Pilot AI Solutions Playbook provides a structured framework for selecting, testing, and implementing AI solutions responsibly within existing organizational processes.

Both resources are available through the newly launched startAD AI Resource Hub, where organizations can also access the AI Adoption Barometer as a benchmarking and decision-support tool.

Building Responsible AI Across the Region

According to Ashwin Joshi, Director of startAD, the AI for Good initiative was created to help mission-driven organizations move beyond interest in AI toward practical, responsible adoption.

He explained that one of the strongest needs identified during the programme was access to practical, easy-to-follow guidance that enables organizations to adopt AI at their own pace while maintaining responsible governance.

Anthony Nakache, Managing Director of Google MENA, noted that the initiative aims to demonstrate that meaningful AI adoption does not necessarily require extensive financial resources or highly specialized technical expertise. Through Google.org’s support, the programme seeks to improve healthcare accessibility for underserved communities while expanding AI opportunities across the UAE.

Strengthening AI Readiness Across the MENA Region

Since its launch, the AI for Good programme has supported five organizations through 13 AI readiness workshops, achieving an average 43% improvement in AI readiness among participating institutions.

The initiative has also engaged nearly 200 university students, innovators, and solution developers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the wider Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, helping build local AI capabilities and encourage responsible innovation.

As AI adoption accelerates across industries, the AI Adoption Barometer provides organizations with a practical roadmap for evaluating readiness, identifying implementation gaps, and scaling successful AI initiatives in a structured and responsible manner.
