According to UNICEF, the programme is designed to ensure that timely, reliable learning data translates into targeted interventions, allowing teachers and education leaders to respond earlier to learners who need additional support.
UNICEF Lesotho, in partnership with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), is supporting the Ministry of Education and Training in the development of a Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Dashboard and Scorecards to enhance learning outcomes for young children through the effective use of education data.
The digital platform will track the performance of learners in Grades 1 to 3 in numeracy, Sesotho, English and life skills. By bringing learning data together in a single, accessible system, the dashboard will help schools, education clusters, district officials and national policymakers identify learning gaps at an early stage, strengthen teacher coaching and allocate resources where they are most needed.
As part of the initiative, principals in 300 project schools and cluster mentors will receive tablets, while 25 cluster learning spaces will be equipped with solar power. The programme also includes capacity-building for education personnel to enhance the collection, analysis and use of foundational learning data.
UNICEF said the programme is intended to ensure that timely and reliable learning data leads to targeted interventions, enabling teachers and education leaders to identify and support learners who need additional assistance sooner. The initiative seeks to improve foundational literacy and numeracy while ensuring every learner is visible within the education system and has a greater chance of succeeding.
