Cloudflare, Inc., a leading connectivity cloud company, has announced the general availability of Precursor, a next-generation continuous behavioural validation engine designed for bot management.
Built directly on Cloudflare’s edge network, Precursor operates seamlessly within web browsers, monitoring entire user sessions to detect bot automation. Unlike traditional static CAPTCHAs, the new solution continuously analyses user interactions in real time, enabling it to identify sophisticated bots while minimising disruptions for legitimate users.
The launch comes at a time when automated bot traffic has, for the first time, surpassed human activity on the Internet, accounting for approximately 57 per cent of all web requests. This development marks a significant shift from an Internet primarily driven by human interactions to one increasingly dominated by AI-powered agents.
According to Cloudflare, the growing prevalence of automated traffic poses new challenges for organisations and consumers alike, as conventional security systems struggle to identify increasingly advanced automated threats. These threats can increase infrastructure costs, manipulate inventories and compromise sensitive data.
While modern bots can often imitate individual actions to bypass one-time security checks, replicating the complexity of an entire human browsing journey remains considerably more difficult. Cloudflare noted that organisations seeking to maintain the integrity of digital services must move beyond static security approaches and adopt continuous behavioural validation methods that analyse telemetry across entire user sessions to uncover sophisticated automated threats.
“Traditional security checks look at a single moment in time, but modern bots have gotten smart enough to fake their way through the front door. Instead of just checking an ID at the gate, we are looking at behavior over the entire visit. This makes life seamless for real users, while making it incredibly difficult and expensive for bad actors to fake human behavior,” said Dane Knecht, Chief Technology Officer at Cloudflare.
He added that Cloudflare already protects users billions of times every day during critical activities such as logins and checkout processes, but noted that interactions occurring between these moments had previously remained largely unmonitored.
“With Precursor, we’re now eliminating that blindspot,” Knecht said.
The introduction of Precursor highlights the rapid transformation of the Internet landscape and underscores the increasing need for more advanced security mechanisms capable of addressing emerging AI-driven threats.
